Diversified Communications acquired The Running Event in a deal with Formula4Media, LLC, that also includes an industry awards gala set to launch in June. Blowing away earlier estimates, newly released data about the B2B exhibitions industry show it contributed a record-setting $91 billion to the U.S. gross domestic product in 2017. The updated numbers were released this week by the Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR). The original estimate was roughly $81 billion, but following extensive talks between CEIR and Chief Economist Allen Shaw, of Global Economic Consulting Associates Inc., it was determined the 2017 data had been underreported. The correct dollar amount was actually $10 billion higher. ...

Ascential plc has agreed to sell its trade show division to fellow U.K. organizer ITE Group in a deal worth 300 million pounds ($419,070,000) that is expected to close in July. The proposed sale would turn Ascential Events Limited, a division of Ascential plc, and its portfolio of seven exhibitions over to ITE, which organizes more than 200 shows worldwide, including a strong presence in Russia and the former Soviet Union states. Ascential decided to sell its exhibitions branch following a strategic review that concluded in February. Their remaining live events include the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in France. ...
AmericasMart and International Market Centers (IMC) will merge in a deal to combine the two leading U.S. operators of showroom space for the furniture, fashion and gift sectors. IMC Chairman & CEO Robert Maricich will become CEO of both companies, which will combine under the IMC brand. IMC operates the World Market Center Las Vegas and the High Point Market in High Point, N.C., which specializes in furniture showrooms and hosts two annual “market” exhibitions. AmericasMart operates the Atlanta Convention Center at AmericasMart in downtown Atlanta, which is the venue for 17 market shows. AmericasMart Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Portman will become an adviser to the IMC Board of Directors when the deal closes in the Third Quarter. ...

LAS VEGAS ─ Live event marketing and support specialist GES is adding some muscle to its executive leadership team. On May 14, Jay Altizer will take the reins as GES’ President, North America to lead the exhibition and exhibit program business in the United States and Canada. In the newly created position, he will report to Steve Moster, President of GES and President/CEO of Viad. “Jay is a natural fit with GES’ philosophy of focusing on the client. He is a proven, dynamic leader,” Moster said. GES created the role to meet the needs of the firm’s rapid expansion in North America, and Altizer has been brought on board to oversee these efforts. ...
WASHINGTON, D.C.  ─ Jennifer Hoff, CEM, President and Owner of Taffy Event Strategies in Arlington, Va., was presented with the 2018 IAEE Woman of Achievement Award during the annual Women’s Leadership Forum, hosted by the International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE). Nearly a dozen IAEE members submitted testimonials that applauded Hoff’s business acumen, leadership skills and generous mentorship. Technology supplier to the trade show industry Core-apps has launched Badger Event Registration, a service aimed at servicing mid-tier conference and small event organizersand their customers. “Not everybody can be the big trade show,” Core-apps CEO Jay Tokosch said. “Our bread and butter is the event that has either no exhibitors or less than 100 and they need someone to help with the registration side.” Nearly 60% of the firm’s customers fall into this category, and Core-apps recognized a gap in the marketplace for providing them with this level of service. ...
