IAEM Meeting This November Expected to Draw Ex-Cahns

Dallas - Former management staff of Cahners Exposition Group, Reed Exhibition Companies and The Kiver Organization  will hold  a reunion following the opening reception of Expo! Expo! IAEM's Annual Meeting & Exhibition in San Diego, CA on Tuesday, November 28th.

There are an estimated 200+ trade show executives who started their career at Cahners (the forerunner of Reed) or the companies that were later acquired by Cahners or Reed.  It was probably Larry Charrlin (now Executive Director of Exhibitions for the Association of Equipment Manufacturers)  who began using the moniker, “ex-Cahns” or “FREAKS” (Former Reed Exhibition And Kiver Shows) to refer to his former colleagues. The  names stuck.  Today, many of these former Reed executives head up and/or own some of the nation’s largest show organizations including incoming IAEM Chairman Jeff Price of Cygnus Exhibitions; John Mooney of M/C Communications; Kerry Gumas and Tom Caridi of Questex Media Group; David Korse of IDG World Expo; Margaret Pederson of Prism Business Media; to name a few.

Cahners Exposition Group was built from the ground up by Bob Krakoff, an executive of Cahners Publishing Company in the 1970s. Norman Cahners and Saul Goldweitz  tasked Krakoff  with creating an exposition division for Cahners Publishing, which was one of the nation’s  leading publishers of trade magazines, books and newsletters. Krakoff built Cahners and Reed into the world’s largest show organization, then went on to head up Advanstar Communications,   and is now President and CEO of VNU Business Media USA.  During  his 30+ years  in the industry, Krakoff  mentored more trade show executives  than any other individual in the industry. These  “ex-Cahns” and “FREAKs”   will gather for their first reunion.

Those who wish to attend the reunion only do not need to register for Expo! Expo! IAEM's Annual Meeting & Exhibition, but must R.S.V.P. to Jeff Price at
